Review: The Callaway Sisters: Side By Side (online)

After being separated for 14 months due to the pandemic, Tony-nominated sisters Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway have reunited to present their latest concert, Side by Side.

Filmed in Ann’s living room in Tucson, the duo sit at Ann’s piano and perform a nice and varied setlist, with classic songs from the likes of Carly Simon and Van Morrison performed alongside musical tunes from the likes of Stephen Schwartz and Stephen Sondheim. There are a few of Ann’s own songs in there too, including the fun ‘Here Come the Callaways’, which introduces them, and the theme tune from television series The Nanny.

Side by Side is a thoroughly enjoyable concert from the two incredibly talented sisters. There really is something for everyone in the choice of songs performed, and particular highlights include Van Morrison’s ‘Moondance’, and the ‘Back-Seat-of-the-Car-Medley’ which features the likes of ‘Sugar Sugar’, ‘Dance to the Music’ and ‘Joy to the World’. Fans of musical theatre are in for a treat with ‘The Huge Medley’, which as the name suggests features several songs including ‘Loathing’ by Stephen Schwartz, ‘I know Him So Well’ by Tim Rice, Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus,  Stephen Sondheim’s ‘Every Day A Little Death’ and Kander and Ebb’s ‘Nowadays’. Each song is performed well with Ann’s deep, sultry vocals and Liz’s soprano complementing each other perfectly.

Throughout the show the sisters converse with one another, tell stories and talk about what music means to them. It’s clear that the pair have a close bond and their affection for one another is a joy to watch. Both Ann and Liz are clearly enjoying themselves and love performing, and their enthusiasm for music is infectious. The show is full of warmth and humour, particularly during a slight hiccup during ‘Moondance’.

The pair round the show off with a lovely rendition of Carole King’s ‘You’ve Got A Friend’, an incredibly apt song because it really does feel as though you’re spending the evening with two good friends. During the show the duo acknowledge the difficult year we’ve had, and Side By Side is a great show to watch to switch off from the outside world and simply enjoy some good music. A fun and enjoyable concert that’s sure to bring a smile to your face!

Rating: 4 out of 5.

The Callaway Sisters: Side by Side is available to watch til the 31st May.
